Taydem loves to participate in team sports. It is also fun for us to be able to watch him use his athletic abilities and get some exercise! This Saturday after his basketball game it our turn to provide the snack.
Almost every team he has ever been on has a group snack after the game. I cringe when I see what my child and the other children are being given after they have just done something good for their bodies. I am still surprised that so many people think that we need to give our kids treats at EVERY opportunity. What kind of habits are we creating?
We prefer to save the treats for special times- not after exercise. That is why we have talked with Taydem and decided as a family it is best to politely deny unhealthy treats. We have fresh or dried fruit packed in the diaper bag for our own after game treat.
It is not always easy to think of healthy, easy to distribute, affordable snacks to bring so I thought I would try to help by offering a few suggestions.
- Fruit (the perfect re-fueler after exercise) bananas, apples, clementines, grapes, melon
- Frozen grapes
- Fruit Kabobs (use long lollipop sticks to avoid sharp pointed "weapons")
- Trail Mix
- 100% whole wheat muffins
- Natural oatmeal cookies
- Granola Bars. prepackaged option: Z-bars by Cliff Bars
- Organic string cheese
- Fruit Leathers or rolls made with 100% fruit
- Stove top popcorn
- Drink: water, water or water
In the past when Alex and I have coached Taydem's teams we have given the parents handouts with suggestions for choosing healthy snacks. His baseball team last year actually opted out of having after game snacks! Great for the kids and parents!
What is Taydem bring for snack this week: Frozen Grapes and Bananas
